Fairway woods an important part of your golf club set. But many standard preassembled club sets don’t include any fairway woods. They only wood it will include is the driver (which is just as tragic as the fact that they often include only a pitching wedge instead of providing a combination of different wedges).
You are going to get much better quality and usage for your money if you assemble your own golf club set and part of that is selecting one or two fairway woods to add to the collection.
This model from Callaway is a beautiful example. They make a 3 wood and a 5 wood, both of which we like. There are a lot of things to rave about here:
The graphite shaft is great for flexibility and speed but you do sacrifice a lot of control on your golf swing. Because of this, we don’t recommend this particular model for beginners or high handicap players. It’s much better suited to a mid to low handicapper who has some familiarity with using a lighter, longer club like this.
A newcomer to golf is likely going to find this club difficult to use as it will swing too fast and you might find yourself missing a lot. However, the lower center of gravity does help provide more stability than you would normally get out of such a hyper speed design.
For beginners, we recommend something with a steel shaft and a cavity back clubhead. This helps create a more stable and consistent swing as woods are already the trickier clubs to learn in the set.
While we wouldn’t recommend this club to a beginner, it is a wonderful option for the more seasoned golf. It’s specifically designed for someone who knows how to take advantage of the adjustability, flexibility, and speed that it offers. Everything about this fairway wood is built for speed.
Overall, we have to say this is a great club to include in an experienced player’s golf club set.
